Segmentation

Segmentation

Segmentation is where you create segments of your audience. These segments can be used throughout the entire application (where applicable) like Flows and Broadcasting. Segments are parts of your audience meeting your desired criteria. This segmentation feature allows you to really fine-tune part of your audience so messages can be made more relevant.

Here's a short video on how Segmentation works:

We hope the video sheds some light on the segmentation feature. If that went a bit too fast for your taste, please see the rest of the article about the Segmentation Page.

Segmentation Page Features

You can create multiple segmentation. This article covers both the basic and more advanced features on how to segment your audience.

Segmentation Overview

Once you’ve clicked on “Segmentation” under the “Audience Icon”, you will be forwarded to the table holding all the segments you created in the past. If it’s your first time creating a New Segment the table will obviously be empty.

The Segmentation Table

This is where you see all the segments you’ve created. From this page you can Create a New Segment, or choose to Edit, Rename, Delete, or Duplicate an existing Segment. The Bulk action on this page allows you to Delete multiple segments at once.

Segmentation Table Explained

In this section of the article, you find what you can expect on the Segmentation Table

1. Name

This is the name – as set up by you – of your segment

2. Actions

These are the actions you can perform on a segment, currently: Edit, Rename, Delete and Duplicate.

3. Drop Down Menu

You can change the number of Segments you want to appear per page by clicking the drop-down in the right upper corner. You can choose to show either 10, 25, 50 or 100 Segments per page.

4. Search

In the right upper corner, you can also use the search field. Search terms are applied to all data in the table. This means you can search for a segment by typing the name.

5. Next/Previous Page

In the bottom right corner, you can view the next page or previous page by clicking “next” or “previous”. This allows you to navigate through all your segments you've created.

How to perform Bulk Actions?

You can perform Bulk Actions by clicking the checkboxes – of the segment you want to perform Bulk Actions on – in the first column. From there you perform Bulk Action(s) like Delete, by clicking the Bulk Actions button in the right upper corner.

Creating a New Segment

  • If you want to Create a New Segment, simply click on the Blue button “Create New Segment” and your browser prompts you with the following window:

To proceed, simply enter a name for your segment and click “OK”. This will take you to the Segmentation Builder where you can specify the rules for this specific Segment.

Segmentation Builder

  • This is the page where you can specify the Groups and Rules that dictate the segment of your choosing. Although it might look complicated at the start, it’s actually very easy if you understand the process of creating a segmentation.

Builder Explained

This page can basically be divided into 3 sections:

  • Segment Query
    • A textual overview of the segment you build with the Segment Builder to help you better understand which current and new subscribers will be in this specific segment.
    • The place holder text: “Start building your segment below in order to see the resulting query.”
  • Segment Builder
    • This what you use to create your segment, based on;
      • Rules – You add or remove Rules to make it as specific as possible
      • Groups – You add or remove Groups to make it as specific as possible
  • Segment Targets
    • This is the preview of your segment. If you already have subscribers that fit the criteria you’ve put into the Segment Builder you’ll see them here.

Creating your first Segment

This section of the article shows you how to create a segment once you’ve clicked on the “Create New Segment” button, gave your new segment a name and clicked on “OK”. When done correctly you find yourself on the Segment Builder page.

The Blank Canvas

  • This is how the Page looks like when you start to create your Segment. It’s already pre-loaded with a Group, and a blank Rule.

In this example, we’re going to create a segment based on English (US) speaking Males. There are multiple ways to achieve this, but we’re obviously going for the simplest one.

  • First, add the Gender Rule. Gender Equals Male.

As you see in “Segment Targets” current subscribers that fit the criteria are already updated. Right now, our Segment is “Gender = Male” without the language Rules.

Adding Rules

  • This is where we are going to add a New Rule. The New Rule in order to introduce Language (English) in our segment.

As you see in “Segment Targets” current subscribers that fit the criteria have been decreased and our DevOps Hero Jan has been removed from the current segment. Right now, our Segment is “Gender = Male AND Language is English (US)”. Meaning we completed our segment.

Review & Save

Always review your segment and make sure you’ve set up the right rules. Then if you’re satisfied, simply Save your Segment by clicking on “Save” in the upper right corner. A Green Notification will appear, indicating a successful save.
